SEO other Search Engine Optimization is a tool that can be used to manipulate Google's AI algorithm to see your site in a certain light for specific keywords that you optimize on the internet. Its basic premise is that links coming from other websites are more or less "voting" for specific keywords you want to show up when someone searches for something you're looking to sell or provide (like a plumber).
SEO is also SEM - Search Engine Marketing and still today most business owners very hear of "SEO" as something consider, a lot of businesses see online marketing as the main keyword they search for when they want someone to help with their website presence.
There are many benefits of proper SEO:
1. It's a reliable source of leads for your niche and market i.e. not having to rely on AdWords advertising as heavily
2. It's ROI trumps over many types of advertising platforms
3. You can show up higher in local areas much easier where there are very few searches on Advertising platforms.
4. When done properly you become an authority in your niche/area.
Now there are many ideas on how to properly do SEO, but one way continues to make waves moving forward. How can I say that? I can say that because I know how Google thinks in terms of spam and how they view REAL businesses. Real businesses act like real businesses... This is a bit of a paradox because many businesses do not know what that means in internet terms. It means if you were a real business and wanted to reach your customers you would be all over the internet telling people about your business. You'll be on Facebook, you'll be on Twitter, Plurk, Medium and many other types of sites. You would be participating in sharing information regarding your niche in many different places and by doing in a directed way, this power and relevant information will begin to increase the trust of your site.
This type of SEO will be used in the future, again how do I know, because I've done this technique years ago and my properties and my clients are still present inside their niche. I've used this technique to breathe life into old sites and businesses that moved from one point of the country to another. SEO can repair a business's bottom line. Now to be fair AdWords can supply immediate leads, whereas SEO can take a month or two or even longer depending on what your business competition is in your local or national level. But many times if combined with legitimate information and community outreach (online) many clients end up with calls and leads the first month.
SEO is not going anyway, it can't, as long as there is an algorithm it will ALWAYS consider this technique of branding your business, as that's what REAL businesses do.
